Steps for Handling Money and Marriage

Couples, your days of fighting about money are over! Experts say financial tension is the #1 reason couples fight. So, here are three steps for handling money and marriage, courtesy of MSN:

* Step #1: Find common ground. The problem with money is that each couple only has so much and if you want a nice vacation, but your spouse wants a new car, you end up competing. So, look for a long-term goal you both share. It could be buying a house, getting out of debt, or saving for a new deck.

* Step #2: Come up with a game plan. Make a list of ways you’ll each contribute. Maybe you can give up your lunches out, and your spouse can give up their morning Latte. Don’t worry if the contributions aren’t the same. The key is to turn the resentment you might feel by making a sacrifice into a ‘taking one for the team’ attitude.

* Step #3: Set short-term goals. You won’t get out of debt or save a down payment overnight, but setting smaller goals - like reducing your debt an extra $200 a month - allows you to track your progress and stay motivated.

It’s that easy! Start by sitting down with your spouse and choosing a big financial goal together. Then, as you make day-to-day money decisions, make them as a couple. That’ll help you stay a couple.

I have never been a football fan. If my husband wanted to watch his favorite college team - the Auburn Tigers - then he had to go to his dad's or a friend's house. Football was not my cup of tea.
